Petting and kissing their dog parents is something that many dogs enjoy doing. Dogs also like licking their own hair, favorite toys, other dogs, and even the walls of their homes! So, what is it about dogs that makes them want to lick everything?

Why do dogs lick?

Dogs lick their lips because it is a natural habit for them. As the pups roll about in their litter, their mothers lick their puppies to groom them, and the puppies lick their siblings as they roll around in their litter. Their wolf ancestors would also lick each other to respectfully ask dominant members of the pack if they may join them for a meal. There are a variety of reasons.

In order to alleviate the scratchy sensation produced by flea bites, allergies, or other common skin issues, dogs have a tendency to lick at sensitive skin. Those dogs that lick around the base of their tails and drag their rear over the carpet may be suffering from problems with their anal glands.
